Hostel Part 2 Review

Hostel Part 2 is defiantly one of the most disturbing and gory films ever made. It’s not just the story that is sick, but the graphic nature of the film makes it impossible to watch for some women and even men. Eli Roth as explained that in many films girls are being used as just pieces of meat, and this is exactly what they are in Hostel Part 2. The whole reason the women are there is so men can do what ever they desire to them, a place where anyone can obtain their guilty fantasies and pleasures. The representation of women and men is very confusing in Hostel Part 2. The reason for is being confusing is that you can never quite work out who is guilty or there for the pleasure. Take Axelle for instance, she appears right at the beginning of the film when she appears as part of a life drawing. As she becomes friends with Beth, you seen to trust her more. There for me was always something about her that I didn’t agree with, I think it’s because she knew so much. You felt that she was in on something. You eventually find out she is working with the company and she is just there to reel in the girls.

The hardest representation to understand is the men. You know already that men are the main source of funding as they go to the Hostel just to kill women, but in Hostel Part 2, there is a male character called Miroslav who when appears on screen you immediately think he is in on capturing the women. He tries to take one of the girls back to his room which is why you end up thinking this. But the tables turn as further on during the film, you see him in pieces being carried away on a trolley. This is when you realize, everyone is not who they seem. Women can go there to kill men and women on women etc.

Hostel is one of the most sexualized gore films out there at the moment. The film has been described as a “Gorno.” This is apparently what happens when you mix porn and gore together! Eli Roth is in my opinion pushing the boundaries of the horror genre and what is legal to show in cinemas. Hostel1 and part 2 are both banned in Germany and Singapore. If anyone is caught watching, producing or importing the movie they will receive a fine. I think this is just ridiculous as it is only a film! The genre he has produced is entirely by him. His filmmaking and gross graphics both imply the two key factors to create not a slasher genre but basically a bloody, violent porn movie.

I’m not so certain where the genre will go from here. Films over the past years have obviously become more violent and of course My Bloody Valentine is the first major horror film to be produced in 3D. This is a possible option for Eli but the cost of making these kinds of films is immense. Also the question is are people really up to watching people get cut up and murdered in 3D? I believe this wouldn’t sell. My Bloody Valentine did sell but that’s only because it was one of a kind. People will get bored of it otherwise. I think what Eli will do is to stick to his intense and brutal stories but still create his graphic trademark around the film. What’s good about his stories and filmmaking is that they are realistic and everything that happens in his films is possible to become a reality. If he sticks to this kind of film making he will be fine as this is what he is famous at doing. I believe he has a good career in front of him and I wish him good luck!

Monty Python Life Of Brian

In class we watched Monty Pythons Life of Brian and had to decide wheather or not we found it shocking personally or if anyone else would.

What ways can "Life of Brian" be viewed as a shocking text?
Bringing religion and cultures into a movie is a very risky business as people do care deeply about what they believe in. The film it self does not actually laugh in the face of religion or christianity which is true and you notice this if you watch the film. But for people who are strongly religious they would argue to the end that this is laughing about Jesus Christ.

Does it shock you?
No not at all. This is only because i am totally not religious at all! I'm not against religion but i believe part of the meaning of the film is true. I understand what they are trying to say in the film and i think they have made a great and comical movie out of it!

My Shocking Scene!

My shocking scene i have chosen is the First attack scene in JAWS! This scene scared the absolute CRAP out of me when i watched it. I believe i was about 11 or 12 when i first set my eyes on it. The reason i think i found this so shocking was the way in which the female victim was thrown about in such an agressive manner. It was just for me, SO REALISTIC! I THOUGHT IT WAS REAL! SNUFF YOU MIGHT SAY! I have always been slightly scared of swimming right out to sea, so this obviously didn't help the whole situation! Also the music which was composed by John Williams really added to the whole effect and mise en scene. All together, it seriously shocked me! Still got it sitting in the back of my mind when im out having a swim!
